A Few PR Do’s & Don'ts of Social Media

Social media is powerful and has only been gaining traction since the pandemic (proven by our recent Facebook platform outage - Gone in Minutes, Out for Hours: Outage Shakes Facebook.“More than 3.5 billion people around the world use Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp to communicate with friends and family, distribute political messaging, and expand their businesses through advertising and outreach”). It can be a key component to growing your business, but it’s essential to understand how to use it. Today we’re taking a look at how to gain momentum for your business through social platforms, including our top do’s and don’ts:

DO create social media accounts on multiple platforms however be mindful of which your target customers use the most. Perhaps you don’t need to focus on Instagram, Facebook Twitter AND LinkedIn. Think about which platform is best suited to your customers - where are they spending time already? Which of these best meets your business and its customers’ needs?

DON’T use multiple usernames/handles for different platforms. If users want to look you up on Twitter with your Instagram handle and it happens to be different, they could have difficulty locating it. Make it as easy as possible for people to find you, recognize your handle, logo and brand image and follow along!

DO follow similar accounts and hashtags that promote similar values, services and/or products as your business. Interacting with content and profiles that are similar to your own will allow you to connect with like-minded communities and discover new ones to join.

DON’T solely use it as a personal account. Of course we all need a little help from our friends getting started but create a distinct business account that will also be able to benefit from business services on social media. While you want to make sure that the business pages read as personable, you always want to maintain professionalism and make sure to post and engage on relevant content, offer advice and good customer service at all times.

DO interact with your followers and comments. Getting to know your supporters and followers is essential to understanding what kind of content they connect with the most. Don’t be shy, ask questions in stories, put out a call to action in the comments and see what resonates with them!

Keep these in mind and your business will continue to grow leaps and bounds and you can even have fun while doing it.
