Writing a Compelling Pitch

In the PR industry, pitches are crucial to building connections, partnerships, and securing media coverage. A well-composed pitch can help you bring your brand exposure and create quality content, benefiting both parties participating. Don’t be intimidated about nailing your successful pitch- we’ve mapped out some of the best tips on where to get started!

To Start...

What is a pitch?

Pitches are a great way to put your business in front of a member of the media in a way that's newsworthy. Look at pitching as an opportunity to connect with members of the media and people of influence. When you read about exciting new products and services within a publication, the first step to getting there was from a pitch! Pitches are a fantastic way for your company to secure more exposure, so taking the time to write an effective pitch is important.

Tips on Writing a Pitch

Get to the Point

Writers, editors, freelancers, and other members of the media don’t have the time to read lengthy pitches. With this in mind, make sure to prioritize getting your point across as opposed to overwhelming them with too much information. Always keep it short and sweet, getting straight to your idea and why it’s relevant to the editor you’re contacting.

Professional, Yet Personal

Being professional is important, but you don’t want your letter to sound like something computer-generated. Think of who your audience is, while also being mindful of who you are representing. You’re acting as the voice of your brand, while also being you. A personalized touch to the letter will make it better received, while also communicating your brand, too.

Know Your Angle

A pitch without a compelling angle will fail to stand out. Before sending a pitch, make sure your story is well thought out; pinpointing exactly what  you’re trying to convey! After that’s considered, think of how your angle is relevant to who you’re pitching the idea to. Make sure to focus on the audience of the publication, as well, to see if your idea will resonate with them. If your pitch has an angle unique to you and proves that it will fit the brand of the company you’re reaching out to, you’re golden.

When Pitching…

DO

DON’T

Read other articles by the editor you are pitching to so you have an understanding of

their work

Mention another publication’s coverage of your news or ask for inclusion in an old article

Embed imagery directly within your pitch if there’s a photo that can bring your story or

product to life

Include heavy attachments with your pitch like high-resolution images or media kits,

unless they have been requested

At the end of the day, writing pitch letters should be a fun way to get creative and help inspire. With practice comes perfection, so don’t get down on yourself if it takes a few tries to get it right. Get ready to expand your network, while enjoying doing it at the same time!
